What’s your biggest goal? And more importantly, what is the biggest obstacle keeping you from achieving this goal? For most people, it seems daunting to dream about big goals. In the end, you should be realistic, right? Fit the framework, do stuff that makes you sort of happy but don’t even dare to think about those big goals of yours. That’s stuff for people that are better than you. How could you ever achieve that? That’s what we get told over and over again. Meanwhile, there are people out there that seem to crush everything they touch. People that just are so unbelievably talented and skilled. People that have bold dreams and just achieve them without any effort. There seems to be something that’s just different about those brilliant people. But are they really that different compared to you and me? I don’t think so. The question you need to ask yourself is: What is keeping you from achieving your biggest goal?
What is keeping you from achieving your biggest goal?
The answer is simpler than you might expect. It’s lesser goals. Take a moment and think about your biggest keystone goal. By that, I mean the one goal that could change the trajectory of your entire life. Great. How will you get there? Reverse-engineer every step you would need to take back to the present moment you are in right now. Although the path you just sketched down might seem challenging and hard (and it most likely is), it really is not as impossible as you might have thought at first. I mean, every step along your path to your keystone goal is perhaps something you can achieve if you were to actually commit to it. One thing leads to another and so on. But now comes the sad truth, most people never get past the first few steps on their journey to their biggest goals.
The reason for that is not that the single steps are “too hard” or impossible to achieve. It’s lesser goals. Those easier goals and opportunity that appear along the journey of pursuing the keystone goal. Once you take the first few steps towards your big goal, new opportunities arise. New jobs, new projects, new things. And what we do then, is change our path. Why? Because it’s more gratifying to have a short-term payoff. We jump from one exciting new opportunity to the next. Thinking we’re making progress. And surprisingly, we are. But unfortunately not in the direction we initially intended to go. Those small opportunities that appear along our journey are lesser goals. Goals that feel good to achieve. Goals that allow you to feel proud of yourself. Goals that give you social credits from your friends and family. But you need to see that those lesser goals are actually just a distraction in the pursuit of the one keystone goal. And this then becomes the single biggest obstacle for you in the pursuit of your biggest goal.
The single biggest obstacle that is holding you back from achieving your most ambitious goal are not factual obstacles that are unsolvable but rather the distraction through lesser goals.
To achieve your biggest goal, you need to eliminate all lesser goals. You need to consciously decide on the path you want to take and don’t get distracted by the nice opportunities that come up throughout your journey.
In order to be great, you need to give up good.
If you want to change the world, in small or big ways, you need to be aware of those lesser goals. Yes, they feel nice and gratifying in the moment. Yet, they are the assured way for you to give up on your boldest dreams. Don’t let lesser goals become the biggest obstacle in your life’s journey. Eliminate those distractions and never stop imagining the boldest and craziest goals you might have. The path might be easier than you think, but only if you eliminate lesser goals.
